Here are some tips for those wishing to get an acceptable band score in the IELTS examination:
expand your vocabulary (work on synonyms in particular)
practice on a daily basis under time constraints(just like the real exam)
go through the sample speaking questions, answering them all as you would in the real exam (try to use the related newly-learned words in your speaking in order to activate them )
ask your tutor or a proficient person to check your writing samples and give you feedback on your errors
practice spelling
if you don't have the time or enthusiasm to figure out the exam techniques and tricks you'd be better off with a tutor (someone who has already done the exam )
at least one week before your speaking interview do your best to be exposed to the English language as much as possible (read, listen and speak in English, review your ielts vocabulary, practice speaking in front of the mirror etc.)
