The Department focuses on planning, innovation and management from an engineering perspective. The aim is to develop theory, methods and tools that can support private and public organizations in dealing with increasing demands on e.g. competitiveness, productivity, and sustainability.The professor will be attached to the Division for Production and Service Management, one of the five division and two centers comprising the Department employing 270 persons including presently a staff of faculty and researchers of 148 and 74 Ph.D. students.Responsibilities and tasks
The main focus of the position is to strengthen the research and education in work systems design addressing the complex interactions and integration of technology, organization, space and humans. The key areas are frameworks and methodologies for design and development of production and service systems aiming at the joint optimization of systems performance and human wellbeing.In addition to taking a research leadership the professor is expected to
  • supervise PhD students
  • participate in teaching at BSc, MSc, and PhD level
  • contribute to strategy development and international collaboration
  • engage in international networks and cooperate with relevant international scientific communities
  • take a lead in raising national and international research funding
  • perform academic assessment tasks
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have a strong theoretical and applied background within work systems design based on frameworks and methodologies from human factors and ergonomics, organizational theory, systems engineering, participatory design and STS. The candidate should also have experiences with empirical studies of engineering design processes and the role of engineers and ergonomists in work systems design.Additional qualifications for the position include documented experience with:
  • Interactive research including a practitioner as well as a scientific perspective
  • Industrial collaboration related to work systemsdiagnosis and solutions
  • Managing cross-disciplinary research teams

At the Department of Supply Chain Management and Management Science at the University of Cologne, we analyze and optimize production, logistics and information systems. In doing so, we investigate the supply chain from product design to after sales service. Our focus is on implementing quantitative optimization methods.
From October 1, 2013 (possibly earlier), we are looking for a new PhD candidate as a temporary hire. The salary will be according to tariff part TV-L 13. The work schedule will be 75 to 100 percent of a full time position
