The IMPRS “From Molecules to Organisms” is an international PhD program offered jointly by the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology, the Friedrich Miescher Laboratory and the Eberhard Karls University in Tuebingen, Germany. Students highly motivated about research should have or be about to obtain an excellent University degree (at Masters or German diploma level) in the life sciences or a related discipline.
Study Subject(s): The scholarship is provided in Bioinformatics, Biophysics, Structural biology, Molecular and cellular biology, Molecular genetics in plant and animal models, Developmental biology, Evolution, Natural variation, ecology and Genomics.
Course Level: This scholarship is for pursuing doctoral level.

PhD opportunities in a first class research environment Hannover Biomedical Research School, as part of Hannover Medical School (MHH), invites applications for its three PhD programs to commence in October 2013. Our offer HBRS is one of Germany’s leading graduate schools, funded by the Excellence Initiative and offering top-level research, education and training possibilities. Under this umbrella our three international PhD programs Infection Biology, Molecular Medicine and Regenerative Sciences provide fully-funded studentships for a three-year course. In all three programs the focus is placed on individual research projects, complemented by program specific seminars as well as an individualized curriculum comprising lab and soft-skill courses, congresses, symposia and summer schools. 2013 International PhD Programme in Molecular Life Sciences, Austria International PhD Programme in Molecular Life Sciences is offered by Vienna Biocenter (VBC), Austria. The VBC PhD Programme is a research-oriented educational program that aims to support the scientific training of young graduates from all over the world. The salary includes health insurance, pension insurance, accident insurance and unemployment insurance.

What does it cover? Salaries in the Vienna Biocenter PhD programme are amongst the best in Europe. The average price of accommodation for a student is approx. 500 – 600 Euros per month depending on the type of accommodation and thus the salary guarantees that a student can live in Vienna rather comfortably..

The Life Science Zurich Graduate School consists of several highly competitive Ph.D. programs, run jointly by the ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich. Each program offers research and education opportunities in a stimulating international environment for ambitious students who wish to work towards a Ph.D. degree. Accepted students are fully funded (ca. EUR 34'500 p.a.) and perform their research project in one of the participating research groups of their favorite program, according to their scientific interest. Advanced teaching and training courses are offered throughout the curriculum. The program language is English throughout. Ph.D. studies usually last 3-4 years.
Education

Applicants must hold or anticipate receiving a Master’s degree or equivalent from a university in a relevant field before starting the Ph.D. program. Applicants accepted for the program will have to register with either the University of Zurich or ETH Zurich, depending on the affiliation of their future research group.

Second phase: The candidates selected in First Phase will present their previous work in the format of a poster in a session to which the faculty of the Programme will be invited. They will be evaluated for:
1) scientific spirit;
2) ability to rigorously communicate scientific results;
3) interest in developing a career in a research laboratory or an industry. Their enthusiasm will be under close scrutiny.
In this phase candidates will be asked to provide scientific areas or themes in which they would like to conduct research and will have the opportunity to meet with prospective supervisors.

Scholarship Description: The EMBL International PhD Programme is Europe’s ‘best in class’ PhD programme for the life sciences. 200 students from over 40 countries are carrying out PhD research at EMBL at any time. Every year we admit an average of 50 new students, who belong to the top science graduates in their countries. They are carefully selected from a large multi-national pool of applicants that reached over 1700 applications in 2012. The EMBL International PhD Programme provides comprehensive training that promotes scientific excellence, independence and creativity. We try to maintain a careful balance between theory and practice, between close mentoring and creative freedom, between collaborative teamwork and independence. A concept that works! More than 95% of our students successfully complete their PhD degree and on average they publish two first author papers based on their PhD work. These successes make the EMBL International PhD Programme a role model, which has inspired many similar programmes at science institutions throughout Europe and the world. EMBL has 3 official languages (English, German and French). However, English is most commonly used across sites in the everyday working environment.
Duration of award(s): The typical duration of a PhD thesis at EMBL is 3.5 to 4 years. EMBL predoctoral fellowships are initially awarded for 3.5 years, with the possibility of a half-year extension.
What does it cover? The stipend is competitive by international standards and includes broad health care benefits and pension.
Selection Criteria: All applications are evaluated solely on the basis of qualification and scientific potential.

Phd position in Brain research, At Aalto university, Finland

We are looking for a doctoral student to work in a project which involves the study of human brain function using non-invasive neuroimaging at Aalto University. The specific focus area is the neural basis of hearing and the processing of speech in the brain. The doctoral student will be based at the Brain and Mind Laboratory (BML) which is part of the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Computational Science (BECS), Aalto University School of Science. The research methods include magnetoencephalography (MEG), functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and behavioural measurements. The project, combining psychology, neurosciences, and computational methods, aims to reveal how the human auditory system and its memory mechanisms have evolved to become specialized in processing speech signals. The project is funded by the Academy of Finland and Aalto University.

Who are we looking for?
We are looking for an applicant who has recently completed, or is nearing completion, of a master’s degree in psychology, cognitive science, physics, or engineering. We are especially seeking applicants with an interest in developing their skills in cognitive neuroscience and computational methods. Programming skills are desirable. The applicant is expected to have both good teamwork skills and an ability to work independently. A good command of English is required.
